PRESS RELEASE

ONE BOOK, ONE SAN JOAQUIN

One Book, One San Joaquin, a countywide reading campaign, has the goal of cultivating a love for classic novels, improving our community’s literacy rate, and showcasing the way in which organizations can work together for a good cause.

This year’s selected title is Robert Warren Penn’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel All the King’s Men

The kick-off event for this years One Book, One San Joaquin is on August 27th at Troke Library and on-going programming will run through September 30th.  Even though One Book, One San Joaquin programs are in full-swing the month of September, we encourage people to get a copy of the book and to start reading now.  The book is available all throughout the county at all library branches and in most bookstores.

“I am excited to be celebrating the novels ability to enrich our lives and broaden our perspectives, but also the power it has to bring us together as a community,” said City Librarian Chris Freeman.

The events that support the One Book, One San Joaquin program consist of author visits, film screenings, book talks, and a look at the history of Stockton and San Joaquin County – most notably in relation to this area’s experience with film-making.

“This reading campaign is going to be phenomenal because of how much support the Library has received from organizations throughout San Joaquin County,” said Youth Services Coordinator Suzy Daveluy.  “On behalf of all library staff, I would like to express a huge amount of gratitude to the Friends of the Stockton Public Library, the Library & Literacy Foundation for San Joaquin County, and the Stockton Arts Commission for their generous funding that has made the programming for this event possible.”

For a full listing of program details, including the kick-off event that will be held at Troke Branch on Saturday, August 27 at 2:00pm, please view the website www.readsanjoaquin.org

“People are already reading the book, and the momentum is building. We encourage everyone to read All the King’s Men and attend a program or simply discuss it with your friends or family. There are many ways to get involved,” said Community Relations Officer Heather Mompean.
