PRESS RELEASE

Stockton-San Joaquin County Public Library Eliminates Paper Notices Notifying Customers of Hold Items in Effort to Save Money

In an effort to help reduce operating expenses, Stockton-San Joaquin County Public Library will stop generating and mailing paper notices to customers beginning Tuesday, July 6, 2010.

Chris Freeman, City Librarian, said "We estimate that nearly 88,000 paper notices are mailed out annually at a cost of around $42,000.  Switching to the email notification has the potential to save us at least half of that current expense.”

The Library has initiated a campaign to move people still receiving paper notices to e-mail. "There are many advantages to receiving notices by e-mail," Freeman continued. "In addition to saving taxpayers money and conserving paper, customers will get information about hold items ready for pick up as soon as they are available. With paper notices, it can take several days. They can also receive the e-mail notices at home or work, whichever they provide and prefer."

To sign up for e-mail notices, visit any SSJCPL branch and talk to a Library staff member in person to have your notice preference switched to e-mail.  Or, call (209) 937-8221 or countywide toll-free at (866) 805-7323 and listen for the option to speak to a Library staff member from the check-out desk.  Library account information may also be delivered to customers through automated telephone messages.

Stockton San Joaquin County Public Library, part of the Community Services Department, serves residents throughout six cities and the unincorporated areas of San Joaquin County.  For more information call toll free in San Joaquin County (866) 805-7323 or if calling from within Stockton dial (209) 937-8221.  Visit us online at www.stockton.lib.ca.us.  Follow us on Twitter at www.twitter.com/ssjcpl or join us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ssjcpl.
