The Literacy Services office operates and supports a variety of programs that include:

Adult Literacy Services

One in four adults in San Joaquin County lacks basic literacy skills. Through one-on-one tutoring done by volunteers in the community, the Adult Literacy program's goals are to promote and maintain the basic literacy skills of English-speaking adults so they may attain personal goals and participate more fully in society as parents and family members, as workers, and as community members and citizens. This program is funded by a California Library Literacy Services grant.

Adult Literacy Learner - If you, or someone you know, wishes to learn to read or improve reading skills, contact the Adult Literacy program office to schedule an appointment by calling (209) 937-7778. Visit in person at Cesar Chavez Central Library during regular branch hours at 605 N. El Dorado Street, Stockton.

Adult Literacy Tutor - Make a difference by teaching an adult to read. Tutors gain great satisfaction by helping someone learn to read and achieve their literacy goals. Some goals are as simple as a mother reading a prescription for their child or a grandfather being able to read a letter from his grandchild.

We are looking for volunteer tutors who:

  • are at least 18 years of age;
  • are able to read and write competently in English;
  • will commit to volunteering for 3 hours a week for a 6 month minimum;
  • will be fingerprinted;
  • will attend tutor training and other tutor in-service workshops.

Please contact the Adult Literacy program office to begin making a difference in someone's life by gifting them the ability to read. (209) 937-7778

Families for Literacy

This is a component of the Adult Literacy program which provides an opportunity for adult learners to share books with and develop a love of reading in their young children. Adult learners who are the primary caregivers of children age 0-5 are encouraged to take part in this program as a way to introduce adult literacy learners and their families to the value and joy of reading as a family. This program is funded by a California Library Literacy Services Grant.

Please contact the Adult Literacy program office to learn more about this program by calling (209) 937-7778 or, if you are an Adult Literacy Learner, ask your tutor for more information.

Families Reading Together

This program encourages family literacy by introducing preschool and elementary age children and their parents to the library and its many free resources. Programs are held at library branches, schools, and community centers. Children enjoy fun storytimes and learn about great books to read on their own.

Thanks to the funding from the Friends of the Stockton Public Library and other community organizations, each child that attends receives a free book.

If interested in learning more about this program call (209) 937-7778 or visit in person at Cesar Chavez Central Library during regular branch hours at 605 N. El Dorado Street, Stockton.
