The Stockton-San Joaquin County Public Library is a partial Government Depository library. As such, it has a wide-ranging collection of current and historical federal government documents. The best finding aid for federal government documents is maintained at the U.S. Government Printing Office. Documents held by the Stockton-San Joaquin County Public Library are kept at the Cesar Chavez Central Library. Ask at the Information Desk for assistance in finding specific items.

This site's powerful search engine and ever-growing collection of topical and customer-focused links connects you to millions of web pages - from the federal government, local and tribal governments and to foreign nations around the world. On USA.gov, you can search more than 51 million web pages from federal and state governments, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories. Most of these pages are not available on commercial websites. USA.gov claims to have the most comprehensive search of government anywhere on the Internet. Consider also the usefulness of more specialized subsets of USA.gov, such as science.gov.

Background Notes Archive
The original State Department Background Notes web site has become a permanent electronic archive of information released prior to January 20, 2001. Please see www.state.gov for material released since President George W. Bush took office on that date. This site is not updated so external links may no longer function.
C.I.A. World Factbook
The CIA maintains a detailed, encyclopedic dossier on every country, recognized island group, and some regions. Each entry contains information about population, economic condition, trade, conflicts, and politics There is information important to travelers, like weather, natural hazards and severe weather seasons, and communications. There is also a good weights and measures table, a list of United Nations bodies, and a list of international organizations and groups.

Country Studies
These are electronic books originally compiled by the Army. A typical book in the series-- which is intended to provide an introduction to individual countries-- contains five chapters describing and analyzing its history, society, economy, government and politics, and national security. Currently there are 71 studies...some encompass two or more countries or an entire region.

Embassy World
This site offers several ways to search for American and foreign embassies and consulates around the world. One of its useful search options lets you select a country and find its embassy in any other country.

Electronic Embassy
This site focuses on all the foreign embassies in Washington, D.C.

American FactFinder (U.S. Bureau of the Census)
This site, created and maintained by the U.S. Bureau of the Census, offers many ways to look up Year 2000 census maps and data. You can look up many sorts of information currently, but there will also be many more detailed reports added as they become available.
Commerce Business Daily
has changed into FedBizOpps (Federal Business Opportunities)
FedBizOpps.gov is the single government point-of-entry (GPE) for Federal government procurement opportunities over $25,000. Government buyers are able to publicize their business opportunities by posting information directly to FedBizOpps via the Internet. Through one portal - FedBizOpps (FBO) - commercial vendors seeking Federal markets for their products and services can search, monitor and retrieve opportunities solicited by the entire Federal contracting community.
Congressional Directory
This federal government site reproduces the well-known Congressional Directory for the Internet. You can look by state or use the search tool to put in a name. You will quickly find information about all U.S. Senators and Representatives.

The Federal Court Locator
The Federal Court Locator is a service provided by the Villanova University School of Law. It is intended to give net citizens a means to access information related to the federal judiciary, including slip opinions. This information can be viewed on-line or it can be downloaded.

This link leads to the official U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services website. The USCIS site offers a wealth of information about the citizenship and immigration process and also provides downloadable forms to potential applicants.

National Climatic Data Center Online
If you are IN THE LIBRARY, you can access this government site free of charge. Since the Central Library is a Depository Library, the Librarian can enter a password to access the online database of climatalogical data. So, for example, once connected, you can view the climatalogical data for Stockton or any city in the U.S. for any specified month back several years. If you are not in the library, it IS possible to either subscribe to the service or pay for individual copies or reports. To view the data, you will need the Adobe Acrobat Reader.

Findlaw: Supreme Court Opinions
This site offers many handy features including access to a legal dictionary, Supreme Court Cases 1893 to present, federal appeals court decisions, and a searchable database of the U.S. Constitution with highlighted topics. **Please note!** You must click on the box to the right of the grey "search" button to specify which database you want.

The OYEZ Project (via Northwestern University)
This innovative site offers multiple ways to access Supreme Court cases (search by title, citation, subject or date), extensive information about all current justices, a virtual tour of the Supreme Court building (if you have installed the Apple Quicktime VR viewer), and RealAudio recordings of actual attorneys delivering their arguments before the Court.

Supreme Court Collection (via Legal Information Institute, Cornell University)
This site offers extensive information on cases from 1990 to present. For decisions before 1990, they have selected 600 of the most important cases to archive. This site is somewhat more difficult to use but it offers more powerful search capabilities and links from famous cases to other cases.

Thomas (as in Jefferson)
Thomas provides access to the full-text of current and previous session U.S. legislation. It also connects you to the Congressional Record, the U.S. Constitution and to some sites at the House of Representatives and the Senate.

This site lets you search for federal laws. This database contains the general and permanent laws of the United States.

United States Historical Census Data Browser
The data presented here describe the people and the economy of the US for each state and county from 1790 to 1970.
U.S. Federal Government Agencies Directory
This site, maintained at LSU, offers an extensive list of links to U.S. government agencies.The structure of the index reflects the structure of the government itself as reflected in The United States Government Manual.

Ballot Propositions
This page, compiled by a Librarian at the Chavez Central Library, provides an index to California Ballot Propositions back to 1978. You can scroll through the listings for each election, or you can use the "Find" button on your browser to jump to a numbered proposition (i.e. 209) or use a keyword (i.e. marijuana) to quickly figure out when a proposition was voted upon.

This list dating back to 1944 was compiled and edited by Barbara Friedrich, Head of Reference, Heafey Law Library, Santa Clara University School of Law. To find things by keyword, you can use the Edit...Find in page function of the Netscape browser.
California Business Permits, Licensing and Registration
Provides key state requirements for doing business in California. This includes meeting state requirements for individuals practicing a profession or vocation in California, as well as obtaining business permits and licenses.

California Code of Regulations
This California Code of Regulations (CCR) Website contains the text of the regulations that have been formally adopted by state agencies, reviewed and approved by the Office of Administrative Law, and filed with the Secretary of State. The CCR consists of 27 titles and contains the regulations of approximately 200 regulatory agencies. Note that Title 6 (Governor's Regulations) presently contains no regulations, and Title 24 (California Building Standards) is published separately and not as part of this CCR website (see FAQs for further information). This website is updated weekly. You must have a frames-capable browser to use this site.

California Judicial Council Forms
This page allows you to download and print out actual Judicial Council forms for use in court proceedings. The files are in .pdf format so you will need the Adobe Acrobat Reader to view or print them.

California Legislative Information
This site includes such items as the full text of current and previous session California bills, the complete California Code, and various other documents. The two chambers of the legislature also maintain their own portals to other information of interest: California State Assembly | California State Senate.

This site offers a wealth of information about California history, culture, business, government, disaster and emergency relief. It also has a "What's New" section and various topical, keyword & agency indexes.

Counting California
A new initiative committed to enhancing California citizens' access to the growing range of social science and economic data produced by government agencies. In a departure from more static formats, Counting California's single interface enables users access to actual raw data compiled by federal, state, and local agencies, and also allows users to collate and integrate data by topic, geography, title, and provider. Counting California also addresses the serious preservation dilemma posed by ever-changing technology and data formats, insuring easy and continuous access to historical and current information.

Online Archive of California
The Online Archive of California includes a single, searchable database of "finding aids" to primary sources and their digital facsimiles. Institutions such as the University of California, members of the California State University, Stanford University, the California State Archives and Library, and museums throughout the state participate by giving detailed descriptions of their special collections. Some collections include digital images as well. Special projects of the OAC include virtual image collections on the following topics: California Cultures, the California Heritage Collection, Cased Photographs Project, Free-Speech Movement, and Japanese American Relocation Digital Archives. Of local interest are descriptions of the special collections at the University of the Pacific and the San Joaquin County Historical Museum. If you need pictures of Yokuts Indian material culture, choose "Search OAC Images" and enter Yokuts in the search box. You will see thumbnail images that can be enlarged in two higher resolutions.
