Geography

Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) from USGS: Enter a current U.S. Place name at this site and it will give you basic geographic information on that place including, when available, name, state, country, longitude/latitude, elevation, and other remarks. Once you are viewing a map, you can also find links to aerial photographs, topographical maps (which are actually better at: Topozone.com and digital raster graphics.
Global Gazetteer: This is a directory of 2,880,532 of the world's cities and towns, sorted by country and linked to a map for each town. The site gives the town's longitude, latitude and altitude and shows its position on local, country and world maps. Current weather for the nearest weather station is also available.
Google Maps [Beta]: Enter requests for location and map information in the Google Maps search box using natural language terms like "movie theaters in Stockton CA" and see a map and lists of addresses of theaters in Stockton and surrounding communities. This is still the Beta version.
How Far Is It?: This service uses data from the US Census and a supplementary list of cities around the world to find the latitude and longitude of two places, and then calculates the distance between them (as the crow flies). It also provides a map showing the two places, using the Xerox PARC Map Server.
MapBlast: Offers simple maps of cities throughout the world and driving directions between cities in any country. More detailed options are available in the U.S.
MapQuest: This innovative service, provided by Geo Systems Global Corp. offers a myriad of map services for free.
MapsOnUs: This site will create maps and give you driving route directions. It also offers a "yellow pages" lookup feature so you can find stores or named buildings within a city or town.

Topozone.com: Topographical maps for all U.S. locations. You can zoom in and out and move around in each map. Even though you can't print out full size topo maps, you CAN print out a section the size of a standard 8 1/2 by 11 piece of paper.
